Testifying Via Video: What you Need to Know
Monday, December 13, 2021 10:10 a.m. - 11:50 a.m. ETThe COVID pandemic has accelerated the use of remote video technology in depositions, trial testimony, and court proceedings. Video communication is not necessarily better or worse than live oral performance, but it is undoubtedly a different medium that has different constraints and possibilities than live performance. This workshop, co-taught by anthropologist and trial consultant Sarah Murray and actor and trial consultant Andrew Caple-Shaw, gives a thorough overview of how to prepare yourself for effective testimony over video. Topics they will address include:
- The basics of dress, makeup, and lighting
- The role of practice
- How to relate to the camera and use your body within the space of the camera to communicate
- Using visuals on camera versus using them in person
- Keeping your listener’s attention in a virtual environment
- Recognize technical basics of ensuring good video and sound
- Determine what colors to avoid wearing on camera
- Identify practical tips on how to keep listeners' attention, work with exhibits and visuals, and create a dynamic presentation in a virtual environment
