In this session, the following will be discussed:

  • Growth and inflation: Nominal and real valuation
  • The simple case: Constant inflation rate
  • Complication: Inflationary shocks and their impact on corporate value - shock, hiccup, and digestion
  • A side effect: Taxes, inflation, and corporate values
     

After attending this session, you will be able to:

  • Identify the importance of un-anticipated changes of inflationary expectations ("inflationary shocks") for corporate valuation
  • Recognize that inflationary shocks affect free cash flows and earnings significantly different 
  • Explain why these differences reduce corporate value even though the firm may pass price increases on to its customers by 100%
  • Identify the passage of time until the firm gets back into a steady state again after an inflationary shock
